Themes Restaurant re-opens in time for Christmas Dining

Staff, students, and customers are delighted to be back in our popular Themes restaurant at Newtown College (Part of NPTC Group of Colleges).

Many thanks for putting on an excellent meal last night. I hope this is an omen of what is to come’ wrote one satisfied customer after attending the opening night back at Themes restaurant.

The restaurant known for its themed evenings has been closed due to the pandemic, but earlier this month they welcomed back delighted customers. Once again, the restaurant is running a busy calendar of opening times which will include meals to celebrate traditions, events, and worldwide cuisines such as Chinese New Year, The Six Nations Rugby and St David’s Day to name but a few.  Along with the evening meals, the restaurant also operates lunch time meals, a Coffee Shop and Bistro.

The restaurant is an important part of the training process for our Catering students who gain experience in a fully operational kitchen and restaurant open to the public.

After visiting the coffee shop for the first-time customer Bridget Royce said: ‘From the moment I walked in I was greeted by friendly and professional staff who seemed genuinely keen to make sure I had great experience and I did.  I was in the mood for a light lunch, so I chose the soup and roll. What arrived was a vibrantly coloured, beautifully presented, and tasty parsnip soup. The rolls were clearly freshly made and still warm, perfect with creamy butter. I then went for the mini-Pavlova topped with huge juicy blackberries, strawberries, and fresh cream, which tasted divine and looked more like a work of art than a pudding. I left feeling happy and I will be returning to this little pocket of magic at Newtown College. Thank you to you all.”

Opening times at the restaurant are 6pm Tuesday evenings, 11.30am -1pm Wednesdays Coffee Shop, 12midday – 1.30pm Thursday for Lunches and a new addition of the Bistro 12 – 1.30 on Fridays.  The students will certainly be getting lots of experience and good preparation in time for the popular Themes Christmas Theme Evenings.

The Christmas period has traditionally been one of Themes busiest periods and they are taking bookings for Christmas meals from the 30th November to 9th December. Booking is essential.

The Catering department has taught countless students who have gone on to work not only in our local hospitality industry but also prestigious restaurants up and down the country and beyond. This has included Michelin star restaurants, such as Alice Yeoman working for the prestigious Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons residence of chef Raymond Blanc OBE. It also includes others who have found work with mobile caterers, on board submarines, cruise ships and food producers.

Catering Lecturer, Shaun Bailey said: ‘It’s great to welcome the public back through our doors. The demands of a real time situation are a vital part of the learning process and a great way that students can develop skills, learning how to respond to situations they are likely to encounter.’
