Course Overview

The AS Level / A Level Health & Social Care is a Full-time Further Education course in the Sixth Form Academy, designed for students who are interested in working in the field of Health and Social Care. This is located in the Health, Social and Childcare (HSC) department.

Students studying Health and Social Care will study the rights of service users and the responsibilities of organisations. You will investigate current health issues in society and plan and implement a health promotion campaign. You will gain an understanding of the roles of various professionals in order to prepare for your future career.

  • Entry Requirements

    A minimum of six GCSEs at Grade C or above including Mathematics and English Language.

  • Career Prospects

    Children, Adult, Mental Health Nursing, Childhood Studies, Social Work, Teaching, Other allied professions such as speech and language and occupational therapy.

  • Course Details

    AS -
    Unit 1: Promoting Quality Care and Communication. The unit introduces students to factors affecting the quality of life. The care principles, skills and techniques required by both formal and informal carers to treat individuals well within a range of care settings.
    Unit 2: Promoting Good Health. This unit will enable candidates to gain knowledge and understanding of the factors that influence an individual’s health and well-being, and how recent government initiatives promote good health.

    Unit 7: Provision of Health, Social and Childcare Services. In this unit, candidates will need to study the main health, social care and children’s services to meet individual needs. It will identify service provision in the local area to meet individual needs; Practitioner roles within multi-disciplinary teams; Quality assurance procedures and effects of national policy and legislation on service provision.
    Unit 9: Working in Health & Social Care. The aim of this unit is to help candidates prepare for employment within the areas of health, social care and children’s services. It will enable them to reflect on their own suitability for employment in different job roles, and will also provide opportunities to build on their knowledge and understanding of caring skills/ techniques.

  • Assessment

    Unit 1 - This unit is externally assessed as a 1 ½ hour examination. Unit 2 - This unit is internally assessed. Unit 7 - This unit is externally assessed through controlled assessment course work.
