A Level Music

Course Overview

The AS Level / A Level Music is a Full-time Further Education course in the Sixth Form Academy (SFA), designed for students who are interested in developing their musical skills or wish to become a professional musician.

This is a rigorous and demanding course. Music is a highly respected subject and can be studied alongside most subject combinations. The course has 3 units in each year. These are: Performing, Composing and Appraising. You will study a range of music from the Classical Era to the Twentieth/Twenty-First Century as well as either Musical Theatre, Rock & Pop or Jazz. You will be expected to compose two compositions each year. You will be entitled to receive a weekly individual lesson on your chosen instrument/voice provided by the College as part of the Music Academy. There are a range of extra-curricular activities and concerts, festivals and trips which it is hoped that you will participate in.

  • Entry Requirements

    A minimum of six GCSEs at Grade C or above including English and/or Welsh. You should be a confident performer, with the MINIMUM ability of Grade 5 on your instrument/voice for AS and a MINIMUM ability of Grade 6 for A2 level. An ability to read staff notation is desirable, or at least a desire to do so. Grade 5 theory [ABRSM] is an ideal preparation for the course, although not essential.
