The AS Level / A Level Welsh Second Language course is a Full-time Further Education course within the Sixth Form Academy (SFA). It is designed for students who are interested in languages and progressing their Welsh skills.
This course is based upon set texts, grammar and films. It is necessary to take an interest in the language outside of the classroom by listening to Welsh radio, watching S4C, access Welsh language websites and videos on YouTube.
The programme is assessed through the following skills: reading, writing, and speaking. Lessons are delivered through the medium of Welsh, in the main, which ensures that students reach the highest level of accuracy and fluency.

A minimum of six GCSEs at Grade C or above. GCSE Grade B in Welsh Second Language Full Course Higher Tier. Welsh Second Language Short Course will be considered at Grade A or above.
The course provides a good foundation for further study of Welsh or related subjects at Higher Education and careers in Teaching, Translation, Politics, Marketing, Business, Law, Engineering, PE, Public and Social Services.
Unit 1 Oral Exam: Based on the film 'Patagonia' and coursework, 15% of the qualification.
Unit 2 Coursework: Project with a Welsh theme, 10% of the qualification.
Unit 3 Written Paper: Grammar and poetry, 15% of the qualification.
Unit 4 Oral Exam: Based on the drama ‘Crash' and Welsh in the media and the local area, 20% of the qualification.
Unit 5 Written Paper: Welsh in Society and Letter, 20% of the qualification.
Unit 6 Written Paper: Language and Short Stories, 20% of the qualification.
