Course Overview
NVQ Level 2 course from Black Mountains College in Regenerative Horticulture, to develop skills and knowledge for a successful and rewarding career in horticulture.
This practical course encompasses organic, permaculture and no dig principles, which work in harmony with nature for a sustainable future. The practical outdoor learning is backed up with classroom theory covering botany, soil science, food production and ornamental horticulture.
Course tutors have extensive experience from a broad spectrum of commercial horticulture, bringing up-to-date techniques and knowledge. The course takes places in a unique learning environment in an historic productive walled garden with the third largest Victorian
greenhouse in Wales.
Alongside the NVQ, students will participate in the unique and innovative BMC diploma, covering life skills, ecology and sustainability.
After this course, students may be able to:
- Start a career as a self employed or salaried gardener, landscaper
- Set up or work in a market gardener or plant nursery
Use this qualification towards entry to the BMC undergraduate course
This course is ideal for students who want to further their experience of working in horticulture to increase their ability and confidence. You will study in beautiful, real-life training settings.

201 Prepare ground or area for planting
209 Train and prune fruit trees
210 Prune deciduous spring-flowering shrubs
215 Plant out plants in rows by hand
212 Maintain indoor crops
218 Propagate plants indoors from seed
220 Propagate plants by stem cuttings
240 Identify plants by botanical name
241 Identify damage caused by plant pests
242 Identify plant diseases and disorders
248 Produce a basic garden design
Alongside the Regenerative Horticulture, students will undertake the BMC diploma. This is an innovative programme, supporting students’ development and understanding and career opportunities in the context of an urgent climate crisis.
Sturdy wellies and secateurs. £50 approx.
