Learners’ Senedd visit to experience the home of politics in Wales

Have you ever fancied having your own VIP tour of the Senedd? Business learners from NPTC Group’s Newtown Campus did just that when they took a trip to the Welsh capital as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma.

The day’s events included a whirlwind of political debate on the engagement of young adults and students into politics. As the discussion took place, American Ambassador, Matthew Barzun joined the learners in discussions about their studies and plans for the future.

Later, the learners took part in a practical workshop where they dissected current issues of the day such as smoking in public areas, organ donation and other health matters.

While visiting the Senedd the learners experienced the home of Welsh politics in style with a talk from AM Russell George in one of the Senedd’s debating chambers.

Donna Litten, business lecturer, explained: “Russell lives in Newtown and has travelled to the Senedd for the scheduled afternoon debate. He talked to us about how politicians voted during the debate. He also discussed the topic of the afternoon’s planned debate on school meals. The students thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Senedd and the first-hand experience they received from meeting with Russell George and Matthew Barzun.”
