Highest Achiever Inspires Future Generations
Gavin Freeguard a former student of NPTC Group recently made one of his regular returns to meet students at the College. Gavin is one of the highest achieving students in the history of the College with 6 As at A level before progressing to Oxford University. A genuine case of a local boy doing well.
Since leaving the College Gavin has returned to help and inspire younger students in their university applications and meet with Oxford aspiring students helping with interview techniques. Whilst at Oxford he would show NPTC Group students around and introduce them to Oxford undergraduates.
Gavin spoke about his time at the Afan Campus and in particular the support he received in his studies and university application. He gave interview advice to the students and challenged them with some mock interview questions. He was keen for local students to be given the opportunities he had been given. Gavin went on to speak of his time after Oxford first leading and managing the prestigious Orwell Prize for political books and journalism, taking politics to the public, including younger people. He was then appointed political adviser to Harriet Harman, Deputy Leader of the labour party, this giving him an insight to politics at the highest level.
Noel Williams, former Head of Social Studies and Languages commented;
“Gavin has remained loyal to his roots. What makes him stand out is not just his achievements at College but what he has done since to encourage the younger generation to achieve to their full potential. He again demonstrated his ability to engage and inspire others.”
Gavin has recently been shortlisted to be Aberavon Labour’s candidate for the 2015 General Election. David Rees, Aberavon’s AM, also has former links with the Afan Campus having been a lecturer at the college.
