LUCKY Art and Design students from NPTC Group were treated to an inspiring talk from international artist Neal Rock this week.
The renowned artist and ex-Neath Port Talbot College Fine Art student gave two very illustrated lectures to a packed audience of budding A Level and BTEC Art and Design students about his life and work.
Neal talked about his professional journey from Taibach in Port Talbot to Los Angeles and how his background growing up in Wales has influenced his life and work. He also gave students an insight into progressing from College to Higher Education, including his time at The Royal College of Art in London.
NPTC Group’s Fine Art lecturer Dai Williams who taught Neal some 21 years ago on the Afan Campus and who in part, Neal said, inspired him to follow a career as an artist said:
“As a young 17-year-old student, Neal always had that self-belief, imagination and willingness to learn and enquire - necessary attributes to succeed as an independent fine artist.”
Neal answered questions from the motivated students who were very fascinated in his journey.
Commenting after the event, students said:
“I really enjoyed having an artist like Neal Rock in College that I was able to relate too, in the sense that you are able to achieve anything if you are proactive about your ideas and artwork.”
“I found Neal Rock’s lecture to be very beneficial as it has helped me to put my own ‘life plan’ into perspective and realise that it is possible to live and work as an artist.”
“Being able to meet an artist like Neal Rock from a similar background to myself - same school and College - who has been very successful shows how far I am able to push and realise my aspirations.”
