Carpentry students prove they’re chips off the old block
TWO Carpentry and Joinery students from NPTC Group’s Brecon Beacons Campus have carved their way to a place in the World Skills Cymru Carpentry Final this May.
Sam Ramus and Joe Dobbs, both apprentices for local businesses in Brecon, stole the show by taking 1st and 2nd place in their respective categories, at the regional heat held at Coleg Gwent recently. Both expertly showed off their skills by interpreting drawings of a sash window and partitioning/roofing and bringing them to life using techniques they had gained whilst at College. To add to the success, the pair will also be joined by Jonathan Waller, who will be entering the junior version of the competition.
Eifion Morgan, NPTC Group’s Carpentry and Joinery lecturer, said:
‘’I was very impressed with the quality of their work and I am sure they will both have bright futures in the industry. The skills agenda is crucial in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the construction industry in Wales.”
The WorldSkills UK initiative, Skills Competitions Wales, is designed to promote the importance of developing a highly skilled workforce with the aim to boost high level skills in Wales. Supported by the European Social Fund, the Welsh Government is running a total of 32 Skills Competitions in 2014 in a range of sectors, from carpentry and hairdressing to automotive and patisserie.
Both Sam and Joe will now join the other finalists from Colleges across Wales at the final in Coleg Sir Gâr later this year.
