Catering students come away with gold from National Final

Learners from NPTC Group’s Newtown Campus have been braving the heat of a competition kitchen at the National Final of the World Skills Cook and Serve competition.

Catering students from all over Wales went head-to-head in a demanding cook and serve contest hosted by Coleg Sir Gar.

Three Pathways to Apprenticeship learners joined forces to wow the competition dining room. Chefs James Corbett and Freddie McGettigan cooked up a stunning four-course meal of minestrone soup and fresh bread rolls to start. The main was a chicken chasseur served with turned potatoes and vegetables followed by profiteroles and a selection of Welsh cheeses.
Emma Davies was serving while her commis was first year learner Jordan Dunt.

Competition was heated in the industry standard kitchen but the learners weren’t phased at all and came away with a well-deserved gold.

Food and Beverage lecturer and mentor, Chris Yapp said: “We are very proud of what our students have achieved. Hard work and effort equals gold medals!”

Mandy Carter, course tutor, added: “As course tutor I’m very proud of their achievements which showed dedication and hard work.”
