NPTC Group Students Shortlisted as Finalists in Barclays Money Skills ‘Weeks’ Competition

A team of students from NPTC Group will be heading to Barclays’ Head Offices in Canary Wharf, London to compete for the chance to be crowned winners of the national ‘Built for business’ enterprise competition, which forms part of this year’s Barclays Money Skills ‘weeks’ programme.

The event which will take place on Friday 13 June, is the final element of the 2014 programme, which assists students attending further education colleges in developing their money management, employability and enterprise skills.
The Move’ies’, NPTC Group’s star team, is one of eight teams that have been shortlisted from across the UK to complete in the competition final.
During their trip to the capital they will have five minutes to pitch their business idea; a mobile cinema, with theme nights, to entertain young people in a safe environment, to a panel of judges including Chris Hearn, Head of Education at Barclays and Sylvia Perrins, CEO of The National Skills Academy for Financial Services. Students attending the final will also benefit from a careers workshop which will help them to brush up on their CV writing and interview skills.
Miranda Thomas (Senior Enterprise Officer) from NPTC Group, commented: “We’re thrilled to have a team from our college shortlisted for the competition final, giving our students the opportunity to show off their entrepreneurial skills. Competitions like these provide students with entrepreneurial learning opportunities and this is completely in line with our college’s aim to make our students more employable and to provide them with the skills they need to secure their future.

Chris Hearn, Head of Education at Barclays said: “Our partnership with the National Skills Academy for Financial Services is an important part of Barclays’ broader commitment to impact five million young futures by 2015. Having judged finalists last year, I’m delighted to have the opportunity to be involved again this year. I am very much looking forward to hearing the team’s ideas. To see the programme culminate in this way is very inspirational.”

Sylvia Perrins, CEO of the National Skills Academy for Financial Services said: “It’s encouraging to have received so many high quality competition entries and clear that students have benefited from the enterprise focused resources provided to colleges through this year’s Barclays Money Skills ‘weeks’ programme.

The Barclays Money Skills ‘weeks’ programme, which was launched in 2010, is delivered in partnership by Barclays and the National Skills Academy for Financial Services, together with CollegesWales, NOW in Northern Ireland and the Colleges Development Network in Scotland.
In 2014 over 130 colleges across the UK ran a Barclays Money Skills ‘week’, with an estimated 150,000 students taking part in money management, employability and enterprise themed activities and the support of over 520 Barclays’ employee volunteers provided via the programme.
