Barclays ‘Built for Business’ Competition

Budding entrepreneurs from NPTC Group’s Neath Campus travelled to London’s very own business capital - Canary Wharf - recently to compete in the final of the Barclay’s ‘Built for Business’ Competition.

Hot from the success of being one of only eight teams chosen from across the UK to compete, the all girl group of A Level students got the chance to pitch their business idea, The Mov-ees’; a mobile cinema with themed nights designed to entertain young people in a safe environment, to a panel of expert judges including Chris Hearn, Head of Education at Barclays and Sylvia Perrins, CEO of The National Skills Academy for Financial Services.

The team who were runners-up in the competition displayed great presentation skills, and demonstrated that they had researched their idea well. They gave a fantastic pitch and also benefitted from a careers workshop which helped them brush up on their CV writing and interviewing skills.

Miranda Thomas, NPTC Group’s Enterprise Officer, who accompanied the team to the competition, is now working with the girls to get their idea off the ground locally said:

‘’I felt tremendously proud of the team. As well as having the chance to show off their entrepreneurial skills, the girls demonstrated great professionalism throughout the competition and were a credit to themselves and the College.’’

In 2014, over 130 colleges across the UK ran a Barclays Money Skills ‘week’ with an estimated 150,000 students taking part in money management, employability and enterprise-themed activities and the support of over 530 Barclays’ employee volunteers provided via the programme.

The Barclays Money Skills ‘week’ programme, which was launched in 2010, is delivered in partnership by Barclays and the National Skills Academy for Financial Services, together with CollegesWales, NOW in Northern Ireland and the Colleges Development Network in Scotland.
