School of Construction and Built Environment
The School of Construction and Built Environment is the largest School within the NPTC Group and offers a wide range of programmes in traditional building craft disciplines such as Brickwork, Bench Joinery, Carpentry and Joinery, Painting and Decorating and Plastering. We also offer professional and technical courses in Construction and Civil Engineering.
NPTC Group is a major provider of Construction Education in Wales and the quality of our provision is the cornerstone of the School’s success. Many of our courses demonstrate excellent completion and attainment rates which are above average in the sector and as a result we have been recognised as the top performing College in Wales for Construction, Planning and the Built Environment.*
Many students progress to long-term careers within the various Built Environment Professions, Construction Management and Allied Industries.
Construction programmes are delivered at five of our major campuses: Brecon Beacons Campus (Bricklaying and Carpentry and Joinery); Newtown Campus (Bricklaying, Carpentry and Joinery and Plastering); Swansea Campus (a dedicated Building Craft Training Centre delivering Bricklaying, Carpentry and Joinery and Plastering); Neath Campus, where both Building Craft and Technician/Higher Technician studies (up to Level 5) are offered; and Afan Campus, where a recently constructed workshop offers superb facilities for 14- to 16-year-old learners - they attend as part of a partnership with schools. There are more than 1,200 students who attend the School weekly, including almost 300, fourteen to sixteen year olds.
The School has offered Higher Education programmes since 1996 and continues to expand the range of HE courses offered. We now offer a range HNCs, HNDs and Foundation Degrees in Construction Management validated by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (Swansea Metropolitan). The evening-only mode of delivery for HNCs has proved very attractive to candidates who are working within the construction industry.
We have a substantial schools provision for fourteen to sixteen year olds through the ANDP within Neath, Port Talbot and Powys and similar established partnerships with various individual local schools in Swansea.
With the skills shortage in traditional building craft, skills are now becoming an increasingly important factor in a student's decision to study at the College. Several training agents such as the CITB Construction Skills, Pathways Training, City and County of Swansea and Powys Training have adopted NPTC Group as their preferred place for offsite training for their apprentices.
Our strong links with local industries are maintained through various activities, e.g. work-based assessment, group training meetings and we have close links with Construction Skills, CIOB, RICS, Asset Skills, etc. plus numerous other training providers.
We provide short professional courses to local industry in areas such as: CAD, SketchUp, Land Surveying, Bricklaying, and Plastering. The College welcomes the opportunity to work in partnership with employers to design and develop bespoke training packages with a number of cost recovery initiatives available.
As a result of growing public confidence in the construction and property industries, student recruitment has expanded in all areas over the past few years. Students have realised that the construction industry can provide a long-term sustainable career and that the NPTC Group can be the 'place for their future'.
The School provides a valued service to the built environment sector across much of mid and south Wales. We hope to have the opportunity to discuss your future needs and support your personal development.
