Foundation Studies

The School of Foundation Studies delivers courses specifically tailored to the needs of those with learning difficulties and/or disabilities at Pre-Entry through to Entry Level 3.


At higher Entry Levels / Level One, the School provides a range of courses for learners who require additional support with their social and emotional needs as well as learning skills.


The aims of the courses within the department are to allow the students to develop as individuals and progress on to further avenues of studies, training or employment.
 

Pre-Entry to Entry Level 2 courses aim to support learners to develop independent skills and identify vocational opportunities for supported employment in the future.
Entry Level 3 and Level 1 courses aim to develop vocational skills in areas that include: Catering, Practical Trades, IT, Creative Arts, Health and Social Care. These courses provide opportunities for learners to further develop skills in literacy and numeracy along with core skills needed for employment and training.
The School caters for a range of students, both full-time and part-time. Learners with autistic needs are integrated throughout the variety of courses. The School prides itself in the transition work carried out with local special schools and alternative educational establishments. There are a variety of taster courses available across all the campuses in Neath Port Talbot and Powys that enable learners who find change difficult, to become more familiar with the College environment whilst being supported at all times.
 

The School of Foundation Studies caters for a varied range of student including those with sensory impairment; physical impairment; ADHD; mild/moderate/severe learning difficulties; those needing to acquire the necessary social skills to be accepted in the community and the world of work. Some of our students may just need time to mature and grow in confidence and self-esteem. The full-time programmes on the Afan, Brecon Beacons, Neath and Newtown Campuses offer the environment and surroundings to do this without threat.
There are specialist staff who deliver part-time courses to learners with complex needs using a range of sensory programmes. Specialist staff work from the Llandrindod Wells Campus as well as within outreach centres in Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot. Specialist staff work closely with professionals in the care and social work setting to devise programmes to meet individuals with profound needs.
 

Staff are qualified, experienced teachers who have specialist skills in order to deliver courses. The majority of staff have received training for meeting the needs of learners with ASC and all have a wide range of experience of supporting learners with their specific needs. Teaching staff and students are assisted by a team of Learning Support Assistants who meet the everyday needs of the students.


The ethos of the School is to offer equal opportunities to all students regardless of any disability they may have and aims to gain the ultimate level of success for these students in order to enhance the quality of their future lives. The School has been successful in achieving this over the decades that it has been operating, mirrored in the success of students academically, socially and sportingly.
The quality of teaching and learning in the School is reflected in the Excellent and Good grades demonstrated in teaching lessons as part of the internal quality cycle across all Powys and Neath Port Talbot Campuses.
