Welcome to the Sixth Form Academy

The 6th Form Academy is a vibrant and dynamic place to study with state-of-the-art facilities including our award-winning 6th Form Academy hub. The 6th Form Academy provides our students with a supportive, nurturing and academic environment to ensure you are challenged to achieve your full potential. The 6th Form Academy is committed to providing opportunities for learners to develop their skills alongside their main course of study. Therefore, the majority of our learners will complete the Skills Challenge Certificate alongside their main qualification. We will prepare you for university life by encouraging independent learning within a sixth form environment.

One of the many benefits of studying at the Academy is the wide range of subject choices. We offer 38 A Level subjects plus vocational courses, GCSEs, Access to HE courses, Introduction to AS course and the PGCE qualification. Our A Level courses are delivered by experienced staff who are subject experts and achieve consistently high pass rates year after year. Students can choose three AS Levels or, in some circumstances four AS levels, plus the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales during their studies. The support our staff offer to students is second to none with high standards continuously maintained. The majority of our students go on to further study and progress onto HE with many attending some of the top universities in the UK, including the Russell Group and Oxbridge.

Making the right choice for AS/A Level study can be the key to your success. Therefore, 6th Form Academy staff will provide you with comprehensive advice and guidance regarding the appropriate combination of subjects and the number of AS Level subjects recommended. We will help you to choose subjects that you enjoy, have the motivation to learn, and will help you progress towards your desired university course or career pathway. The advice and guidance continues throughout your course due to our strong pastoral system, which includes a personal tutor who can answer queries and guide you to extra support within the College to suit your specific needs.

The 6th Form Academy prides itself on supporting you in your academic studies and enabling you to have access to an outstanding library and state of the art learning resources which encourage success. We offer many opportunities for students to stretch themselves intellectually, for example, by taking part in the UK Maths Challenge and Biology Olympiad competitions. Within humanities subjects we work closely with the Orwell Prize to encourage submission of short stories. Within the Law Department our most successful A level Law students have the opportunity to win the Law Award from the highly respected law firm Jennifer Melly Law. Additionally, our Government and Politics students are offered the opportunity to visit the Senedd and ask questions of their local MPs.

Students with an excellent academic profile will be eligible to apply for our Gifted and Talented Excellence (GATE) programme and the SEREN hub network which will offer you a range of masterclasses, designed to enhance your university application. Additionally, for students applying to the top universities including Oxford and Cambridge and, for any students wanting to apply for competitive courses such as Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science, expert advice will be available from guest lecturers and academics.

Our general entry requirements for studying AS levels are a minimum of six GCSEs at grade C or above. Some subjects will have specific entry requirements so please refer to our A Level Entry Requirements list for more details.

A Level Entry Requirements

Make us your first choice

The class of 2022 are the first to sit exams since the pandemic and despite the challenges faced over the last two years, they have shown an impressive resilience to achieve an overall pass rate of almost 99 percent.  A* – B grades exceeded those of 2019 when students last sat examinations, with almost 60 percent of students achieving those grades. Almost a third of students (32.2 percent) achieved A*- A grades, and 83 percent A* – C grades.

For the students who followed the Gifted and Talented (GATE) programme, it’s also good news, with 84 percent achieving A* – A grades and 100 percent A* – B grades.

These results not only reflect the outstanding ability of students within the 6th Form Academy, but also the dedication and commitment of staff within the Academy.

Check out our new Academy Hub!

The Academy Hub is an ultra-modern and vibrant place for students to study.

It includes a Starbucks Coffee shop, interactive touchscreen capability, mobile charging points, and free access to Wi-Fi for all students.

Equally important, this sustainable refurbishment has improved energy efficiency in line with the College’s commitment to improving energy use and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
