The Sports Academy at NPTC Group’s Brecon Beacons College takes a multi-dimensional approach to enhancing athletic performance and suits students from all sporting disciplines. The Academy uses the facilities of Brecon Leisure Centre which includes an athletics track, AstroTurf pitch, sports hall and tennis/netball courts. On-site, the College has its own training pitch and state-of-the-art Strength and Conditioning Centre. The teaching facilities include three teaching rooms, an IT facility and a sports laboratory; all with interactive whiteboards. The lecturers are highly experienced in their own field and are well supported by College staff for all other student learning requirements.
A number of sport courses are on offer from Level 2 Sport and Outdoor Skill, Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science and the Foundation Degree in Sport Coaching and Performance. The content of these courses reflects the performance approach to sport, and consists of both traditional approaches such as anatomy, physiology, sports nutrition and sports psychology, to relatively modern disciplines such as sports coaching and sports massage. The Level 3 course has a superb record for getting students into Higher Education with offers being received from some of the top sporting universities in the country, such as Cardiff Metropolitan and Loughborough. In addition to the main sports qualifications, we offer students additional qualifications in the NVQ Activity Leadership L2, CYQ Level 2/3 Fitness Instructors Award and the Community Sports Leader Award.
The “Cougar Power” Strength and Conditioning Centre
Here, the most innovative and effective programmes are available to meet the entire key fitness variables characteristic of elite performance: speed, agility, strength, power. co-ordination, balance and dynamic mobility. Sessions are delivered as part of the College programme and are designed to fit effectively around academic study and specialist sports coaching.
Students also have access to high quality coaching in the sports of football, netball, hockey and rugby. Coaching sessions are delivered as part of the College programme and are concerned with developing techniques, skills and tactics at individual, unit and team level. Fixtures usually take place on a Wednesday afternoon. Where a specific sporting discipline is not delivered, links with local clubs and organisations provide the coaching expertise. The College has a record of sporting success in winning national championships in a variety of sports and can also boast 50+ international caps across a range of sports: judo, table tennis, hockey, rugby, netball, football, sailing, mountain biking and badminton. The Academy also has the luxury of a 5×30 officer who has the remit to promote health and well-being for all staff and students across the College by offering a range of recreational activities outside the traditional elite performance programmes.
