Newtown College is pleased to announce that Lucy Jones, a dedicated sports student, has been awarded the prestigious Montgomeryshire Society Prize for Further Education 2025. The Montgomeryshire Society, a charitable organisation based in London, has a long-standing tradition of supporting students from the Montgomeryshire area.
The award ceremony took place at Themes restaurant, Newtown College, where Peter Bennett Jones CBE from the Montgomeryshire Society presented the prize. The event was attended by the NPTC Group of Colleges CEO Mark Dacey, Sports lecturers Andy Davies and Amy Watkins, Campus Manager Steve Cass, Head of School for Catering, Hospitality, and Agriculture Sue Lloyd Jones, and Lucy’s mother, Caroline Jones.
Lucy Jones has shown exceptional talent in the S9, SB9, and SM9 Para categories in swimming. She has represented both Wales and England in numerous international competitions, including the British Para National Championships (summer and winter), the City Para Swimming World Series GB, and the City of Bristol International Open meet. Currently, Lucy is pursuing her Level 3 NCFE Sports Science studies and competes for two local clubs – Newtown Swimming Club and Oswestry Otters.
Peter Bennett Jones, whose father Nicholas served as High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire in 1968, has been recognised for his contributions to charity and the television industry, receiving a CBE in 2014, the BAFTA Special Award, and the Royal Television Society Lifetime Achievement Award.
Amy Watkins, Lucy’s Sports lecturer, praised her, saying, “Lucy continuously achieves excellence in all aspects of her work. The work she produces is consistently of a high standard, and she has achieved distinctions in all of her units. She clearly has a passion for sport. She is organised, and her peers often turn to her for guidance.”
