Sport

The Sport department offers a wide range of full- and part-time courses at Newtown College, Brecon Beacons College and Llandarcy Academy of Sport.

Our highly-qualified and experienced staff teach across the breadth of the curriculum, enhancing the student experience on all courses from Level 1 to HND. Many of the sports staff have experience in playing and coaching top-level sports which is invaluable in developing students’ sporting abilities and as part of our academy and enrichment programmes.

The College has a long-standing reputation for sporting success, with many former students gaining international honours in a wide variety of sports. Some of the College’s most famous alumni hail from the field of sports.

The department is proud of its excellent academic results, and the high-quality teaching and learning that fuel that success. Coupled with excellent pastoral care, the sports department epitomises more than just an education.

Sector-leading facilities at Llandarcy Academy of Sport include an international sports hall, climbing wall, strength & conditioning room, 60m indoor track, indoor multisport facility, 4G pitch and teaching rooms with up-to-the-minute digital technology. Newtown College has excellent partnerships with Newtown Football Club and the local authority to support and enrich the curriculum.

The wide range of courses we offer could lead to many careers including sports coach, PE teacher, disability sports officer, sports therapist, sports analyst, sports nutritionist, gym instructor or sports community officer. Academic progression includes Higher Education at the College or another institution. Some elite sportspeople can gain scholarships to study abroad.

Llandary Academy of Sport

We have sector leading sports facilities. These include an elite, national standard multi-use sports hall, climbing wall, all-weather 3G pitch, Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), strength and conditioning suite and an indoor bounding track with warm-up area.

The teaching facilities include ten teaching rooms, complete with interactive whiteboards. The students can also utilise three fully equipped ELC rooms and a comfortable student common room furnished with Sky TV and table tennis table.

Having strong partnerships with both Ospreys Regional Rugby and Swansea City Football Club only outlines our serious commitment to develop our professionalism in the sporting world!

We link with many outside agencies and governing bodies such as the FAW, WRU and NPT PASS department, providing our students with exciting oppor tunities and experiences as well as the opportunity to train alongside professional athletes.

Public Services

The public services department offers a wide range of courses across Brecon Beacons College, Newtown College and Llandarcy Academy of Sport.

Our highly-qualified and experienced staff teach across the breadth of the curriculum, enhancing the student experience on all courses from Level 1 to the HND in Policing and the HND in Public Services.

Many of the public services lecturers have seen active duty across the uniformed public services, using their expert knowledge and experience to engage students.

A public services course will lay the foundations for a career in the armed forces, coastguard, or the ambulance, police or fire services. A large number of our former students have progressed into various careers in uniformed public services including blue-light emergency services and the armed forces.

The department runs educational visits across the country to highlight the breadth of possible careers available in the uniformed public services, providing students with more than just an education. A range of work experience and training is also available.

Brecon Beacons College is situated in the heart of Brecon Beacons National Park, an incredible environment for student enrichment activities.

Also, as of January 2019, there are full-time courses available in the Combined Cadet force at Llandarcy Academy of Sport..
