DancinSoldier Productions, in collaboration with Level 3 Performing Arts students and staff at Neath College, presented Beneath the Surface — an innovative, immersive experience blending contemporary dance, film, and visual art at Nidum Arts Centre, Neath College.
This boundary-pushing event invited audiences to explore four unique zones throughout the venue, showcasing a rich tapestry of live performances, screened works, and thought-provoking art installations. Much of the work was filmed, performed, developed, and curated by artists from NPTC Group of Colleges, offering a rare opportunity to witness the creative talent of both staff and students on a shared professional platform.
This year’s showcase featured contributions from thirteen members of the Creative, Visual, and Performing Arts staff. Highlights included a musical composition by Music lecturer Huw Morgan, atmospheric photography and printmaking by lecturer Wendy Roberts from Afan College, and powerful short films by Neath College lecturer Saydi Jones and members of the Creative Media team. Students from Dance and Performing Arts also brought the space to life through live performance.
Rachel Kehoe, Head of School: Creative Arts and Digital Industries, shared her admiration for the collaborative spirit behind the project:
“I am so impressed and inspired by the way students and staff have all pulled together across our departments, even coming in over Easter to work together on this. And for staff, this was all undertaken around their teaching — from editing films to developing VR experiences.”
Led by lecturer Saydi Jones, Beneath the Surface pushes creative boundaries, even incorporating films into VR goggles to offer an enhanced, multidimensional experience for audiences. She said:
“It is such a privilege to provide a platform for the lecturers and staff of Creative, Visual and Performing Arts to showcase their creativity this way. It inspires our students and reflects the industry-focused approach to our teaching.”
