Cancer Care Training for Health and Social Care Students

Newtown College Health and Social Care students benefited from valuable, real‑world learning this week after receiving specialist cancer care training delivered by the Lingen Davies Trust.

Year 1 Health and Social Care students took part in an informative and engaging training session led by Helen Davies, Powys Cancer Champions Coordinator, and Isobel Onions, Livelife Project Coordinator from the Lingen Davies Trust. The session introduced students to key principles of cancer care and awareness, essential knowledge for those preparing for careers across health, care and community services.

Year 2 students also took part, renewing their cancer care training to ensure their knowledge remains current and aligned with best practice in the sector. These renewal sessions support students as they progress towards employment, apprenticeships or further study within health and social care professions.

The training was delivered in the newly developed student zone, a dedicated space created by Health and Social Care students themselves. The area is designed to provide trusted information and guidance for staff and students on a wide range of physical health and wellbeing issues, demonstrating the proactive and practical nature of the course.

Opportunities such as this reflect the strong emphasis the Health and Social Care programme places on employer engagement, professional insight and real‑world learning, ensuring students develop not only academic knowledge but also the confidence and understanding required to support individuals within healthcare and community settings.

The college is grateful to the Lingen Davies Trust for their continued support and for helping to equip students with the skills, awareness and compassion needed to make a positive impact in their future careers.
