The NPTC Group of Colleges community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Head of Sport, Darryl Jones, a man whose influence on Neath College, Welsh rugby and generations of young people cannot be overstated
For more than two decades, Darryl was at the heart of sport at Neath College. As Head of Department, he built a culture founded on commitment, discipline and pride, inspiring countless students to achieve more than they thought possible. For many, he was far more than a teacher or coach. He was a mentor, role model and a constant source of encouragement.
His achievements on the rugby field were extraordinary. Under his leadership, Neath College became one of the most successful college rugby programmes in Britain, winning multiple Welsh Colleges Championships, 11 British Colleges titles and three Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens crowns. But those who knew Darryl best would tell you that his greatest success was not measured in trophies. It was the impact he had on the young people he coached, taught and believed in.
Many current members of staff were once his students and speak warmly of the standards he set, the opportunities he created and the genuine care he showed for those around him. His influence continues to be felt across the college today through the people whose lives and careers he helped shape.
Darryl’s reputation extended far beyond the college gates. A respected and highly successful rugby coach, he helped develop numerous players who went on to represent Wales and enjoyed distinguished coaching spells with both Neath and Aberavon. He was admired throughout the rugby community for his knowledge, his passion for the game and his ability to bring out the very best in people.
While his achievements were many, it is his character that will be remembered most. Darryl was a proud advocate for education, a committed mentor and a true gentleman whose dedication touched countless lives.
His passing leaves a void that will be felt not only across the rugby community, but throughout the college family that he served with such distinction for so many years.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Darryl’s family, friends, former colleagues, players and students at this incredibly difficult time.
Darryl’s legacy will live on in the generations of students he inspired, the colleagues he supported, and the enduring sporting tradition he helped create at Neath College.
