AS Level / A Level Photography (Full-Time)

Course Overview

AS/A Level Photography is a full-time Further Education course, with the option to also study as a standalone part-time course. Designed for students wanting to work in the Creative Arts industry, with aspirations of becoming a Photographer or just being interested in taking better pictures. This is located in the Creative, Visual and Performing Arts (CVP) Department.

This course will give you the opportunity to develop technical and artistic skills in Photography. You will be producing exciting creative work in both digital and traditional media, using specialist facilities; our darkroom, lighting studio and Apple Mac computer suite.

You will develop knowledge of darkroom practice as well as how to manipulate images digitally using Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and other software, as well as using DSLR cameras, drawing, painting, print media and desktop publishing.

These are explored within the context of thematic projects and live briefs. You will also learn specialist vocabulary and gain a knowledge and understanding of historical and contemporary graphic designers and relevant artists and photographers.

  • Entry Requirements

    If you are under 21 you must have one of the following: 4 GCSE passes at grade A*- C, (or equivalent). We welcome applications from mature students too.

    If you are over 21, have fewer qualifications but have enthusiasm and commitment to study within the Visual Arts, please also apply!

  • Career Prospects

    From this AS/A2 programme, students can progress to the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design L3/4 course at NPTC Group or directly to university or employment.

    There are many exciting areas of Photography to aim for as a career; Fashion, Sport, Documentary, Journalism, Wildlife, Medical, Wedding, Portrait, Landscape, Event Photography etc.

  • Course Modules

    AS Level Year 1
    Unit 1: Personal Creative Enquiry.

    A2 Level Year 2
    Unit 2: Personal Investigation.

    Unit 3: Externally Set Assignment.

    The course is also characterised by broad ranging, creative and experimental approaches to Photography, enabling post Level 2 Art, Design or Media courses, such as GCSE or L2 Diploma, and mature learners to make informed choices about career and progression pathways specific to the area of Photography.

  • Assessment

    You will learn through a variety of theory and practical workshops.

    Assessment will be done using a range of assessment strategies including presentations, exhibitions, reports, essays and practical portfolio; digital or traditional.

    All three units are graded at A* to E and this is confirmed by an External Moderator who will visit the College to view an exhibition of work and a portfolio.

  • Additional Costs

    Costs might include trips to exhibitions and museums and basic Art & Design equipment e.g. paint brushes, scissors, pencils etc. All other materials are supplied by the College.
