Esme Perry, a talented Level 3 Art student at Newtown College, has brought colour and creativity to The Hafren theatre with a striking new graffiti mural. Her design was selected as the winning entry in a regional Graffiti Mural Competition, open to all post-16 students across Montgomeryshire.

The competition, part-funded by the House of Commons Speaker’s Art Fund, invited students to explore the theme “What democracy means to you” through graffiti art. The winning mural now proudly adorns the wall outside the theatre’s bar area.

Esme’s design, featuring three white doves surrounded by vibrant flowers, was praised for its symbolism and artistic impact. The judging panel included renowned North Wales graffiti artist Dime One (Andy Birch) and Montgomeryshire MP Steve Witherden.

Following her win, Esme had the unique opportunity to collaborate with Dime One to bring her design to life on the theatre wall. The result is a bold and inspiring public art installation that has already captured the attention of visitors.

Reflecting on the experience, Esme said:

“It’s been an amazing opportunity. I’ve learned so much and developed new skills in an area of art that’s completely new to me. Working alongside a professional graffiti artist was a real highlight.”

Theatre Manager Sara Clutton added:

“The final piece is absolutely stunning. We’re thrilled with the result and proud to have supported such a meaningful and creative project. It’s been a fantastic experience for everyone involved.”
