Afan College students have proudly showcased their creativity as part of the Richard Burton Centenary Exhibition, contributing to a cultural celebration that brought the community together in Port Talbot.

The Interpretation of Richard Burton Art Competition, organised by San Portablo Arts, aimed to highlight and celebrate local talent by offering a platform for creatives to nurture and exhibit their work. Afan College Foundation Studies students submitted approximately twenty pieces, joining entries from several local schools. These striking portraits formed the backdrop for the exhibition’s closing event at Aberafan Shopping Centre, where visitors enjoyed an afternoon of art, poetry, and performance.

The finale featured readings and original poetry by acclaimed local writer Sally Roberts Jones, alongside powerful performances by local creatives arranged by Drama Consultant Helen John. The event concluded with a moving performance by the Cymric Male Voice Choir, creating an unforgettable cultural moment for the town centre.

Among over 200 submissions, Afan College student Jayden White emerged as the winner of the competition. Jayden received a special prize: his artwork professionally framed with the Aberafan Shopping Centre logo, presented to him at an award ceremony at the shopping centre on December 17th.

Anne-Marie Hames, Afan College lecturer, shared her pride in the students’ achievements:

“Taking part in the Richard Burton centenary art competition has been incredibly rewarding for our students. Learning about Richard Burton’s life and his connection to our local community inspired them. The opportunity to create his portrait gave students a real sense of pride and purpose. For our students, this experience has helped build confidence, develop creative skills and feel part of something meaningful beyond the classroom. I’m thrilled to see their talent recognised and celebrated within the community.”

This competition not only celebrated Richard Burton’s legacy but also showcased the vibrancy and talent within our local spaces—proving once again that Port Talbot is rich in creativity and culture.
