Course Overview
The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing – Painting and Decorating (Construction) is an advanced, work-based qualification for experienced decorators who want to validate their skills at a higher professional standard. It focuses on confirming complex work activities, preparing surfaces, applying advanced decorative finishes, and maintaining safe and productive working practices. The qualification includes a range of mandatory and optional units that allow flexibility to suit different specialisms within the trade.
Delegates must currently be working in a painting and decorating role, as assessment is workplace-based.
Successful delegates gain increased employment opportunities in more advanced trade roles, supervisory positions, or specialist decorative finishing pathways.
Delegates must complete all mandatory units and at least one unit from each optional group.

Mandatory
- Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
- Confirming work activities and resources for an occupational work area in the workplace
- Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships in the workplace
- Confirming the occupational method of work in the workplace
- Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace
- Preparing surfaces for painting and/or decorating in the workplace
- Applying surface coatings by brush and roller in the workplace
Optional A
- Hang wallcoverings (standard and foundation papers) in the workplace
- Hanging non-standard width wallcoverings in the workplace
Optional B
- Applying coatings by the airless spray method in the workplace
- Producing and applying complex stencils in the workplace
- Hanging wallcoverings to complex surfaces in the workplace
- Hanging wallcoverings (specialised paper) in the workplace
This qualification is assessed via a portfolio of evidence.
