A talented apprentice from Newtown College has been recognised for outstanding achievement in construction, receiving the Worshipful Livery Company of Wales Construction Apprenticeship Award 2025.
Helen Breese, a Level 3 Construction apprentice, was presented with the award by Professor John Solbe and Dr Rosie Solbe of the Worshipful Livery Company of Wales during a celebratory ceremony held at Newtown College. The event was attended by Clare Ward, Apprenticeship Officer from Pathways Training, and representatives from Barcud, the housing association where Helen completed her apprenticeship.
The Worshipful Livery Company of Wales, established 30 years ago, is dedicated to nurturing talent across Wales, with a particular focus on promoting education, science, technology, and skilled professions. Its awards aim to support and celebrate the achievements of young people who demonstrate exceptional promise and dedication.
Helen achieved a Double Distinction in her Level 3 Construction Contracting qualification, reflecting both her academic excellence and practical skill. Her apprenticeship was completed with Barcud, a housing association committed to delivering affordable homes and high-quality housing support services across Ceredigion and Powys.
“Helen has been an exceptional learner from day one,” said Clare Ward, Pathway Assessor at NPTC Group of Colleges. “Her commitment to both the academic and practical aspects of her training has been outstanding. She consistently demonstrated initiative, precision, and professionalism in her work with Barcud, and her Double Distinction is a testament to her hard work and talent. Helen is a shining example of what apprenticeships can achieve. She’s not only gained a qualification but has grown into a confident, capable professional ready to make a real impact in the construction industry.”
Helen Breese added: “Winning the Livery Award is a huge honour, I’ve grown in confidence thanks to the support from Barcud and my tutors and it has motivated me even more to pursue a career in construction. I am now undertaking the HNC in Construction and the Built Environment at Brecon College, part of the NPTC Group of Colleges. I hope my journey inspires others to consider apprenticeships as a pathway to success.”
Barcud’s support of apprenticeships reflects its wider mission to invest in local talent, create meaningful employment opportunities, and strengthen communities through sustainable housing development and maintenance services.
