NPTC Group of Colleges is proud to announce that its partnership initiative, Chai and Chat Neath, has been named the overall winner at the prestigious Nation of Sanctuary Awards, recognising exceptional commitment to supporting sanctuary seekers across Wales.

The award, presented at a ceremony held at the Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff, celebrates organisations and individuals who embody Wales’s vision of being a welcoming, inclusive, and compassionate nation. Out of 127 nominations, the group was one of just four finalists before going on to secure the top accolade.

Delivered in partnership with Neath Port Talbot CVS, the Chai and Chat Neath programme has become a cornerstone of community engagement, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to connect, learn and thrive. Meeting weekly at Neath Library, the group has grown from just three participants at its inception to an inspiring 58 members, representing 18 nationalities and more than ten languages.

Through the initiative, participants are able to access a wide range of opportunities, including health and wellbeing programmes, volunteering, education courses, and support services offered by local and regional organisations. Over the past three years, the group has collaborated with more than 50 organisations, creating meaningful and lasting impact within the community.

Speaking about the achievement, Senior Officer: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Rukhsaana Ashraf said:

“This award is a testament to the incredible individuals who make Chai and Chat what it is – a welcoming, supportive space where people feel they belong. The growth of the group and the opportunities it has created demonstrate the power of community and partnership working.”

The success of Chai and Chat Neath highlights NPTC Group of Colleges’ ongoing commitment to promoting inclusivity, celebrating diversity, and strengthening community bonds across the region. The programme continues to provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals can build confidence, develop new skills, and access vital services.

The Nation of Sanctuary Awards shine a light on those making a positive difference in Wales’s sanctuary-seeking and refugee sector – from volunteers and community groups to organisations creating safe and welcoming spaces. The recognition of Chai and Chat Neath underscores the importance of collective action in building a stronger, more inclusive society.

As the programme continues to grow, NPTC Group of Colleges remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that unite communities and create opportunities for all.
