School of Building Engineering Services

The School of Building Engineering Services offers a wide range of full-time, part-time and Higher Education programmes plus commercial bespoke courses designed to meet the needs of this highly innovative and fast-moving industry. We have extensive links with employers and businesses within Wales and the UK. Our programmes cover Electrical Installation and Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Gas Technology, Plumbing, Heating and Ventilation, Energy Efficiency and Advice, Renewable Technologies, Building Control and Management Systems, Construction Management, Building Services and Civil Engineering. They are delivered across four of our main colleges and provide an ideal opportunity to train or re-train to gain employment and fulfil you aspirations in the job you desire:

Afan College

Technical Services in Construction and Civil Engineering

We offer professional and technical courses in Construction and the Built Environment as well as Building Services and Civil Engineering. Our courses demonstrate excellent completion and attainment rates which are above average in the sector and as a result we have been consistently recognised as one of the top performing Colleges in Wales.

We offer academic programmes in these areas at levels 3/4/5 and 6. These include BTEC level 3, Higher Apprenticeships and HNCs/ HNDs in Construction Management, Building Services and Civil Engineering which can progress to the BSc Honours Degree in Construction Management.

Electrical

The Afan College delivers our Electro-technical courses from Level 1 to Level 3. As well as Electrical and Electronic Engineering at L3 for industry. Our state-of-the-art workshops and classrooms enable us to deliver quality training where the latest techniques and equipment are used to ensure learners are ready for this ever changing and demanding Sector. Our part time courses offer the opportunity to re-train in the electrical industry in preparation for career change or up-skill Professional Development. To compliment this we offer a full range of electro-technical CPD and are a recongised NICEIC training centre for CPD.

The Energy Centre

Gas Technology

The NPTC Energy Centre contains our Certsure LLP Gas Safe ACS training and assessment centre, as well as our EUIAS approved training for Smart Meters. This has developed into one of the largest centres of its kind in Wales and has been recognised by the awarding body as a ‘Centre of Excellence’. Facilities are constantly being updated to ensure the best training and assessment on both new and old equipment and systems are available. The latest qualifications for entry into the Gas industry are delivered by experts in the field and benefit from being ACS aligned to improve quality of provision and safety in the workplace. The same staff who operate the Gas Safe training and Assessment deliver on this, thus ensuring the best outcome for all who choose this as their career path.

Fire Sprinkler Qualifications and Training

The NPTC energy Centre also contains our Fire Sprinkler Training Area. As the only BAFSA Approved Training Centre in South Wales we were the first to develop an up-skilling professional development qualification for the Mechanical Services trades to deliver on the Welsh Governments Fire Sprinkler Measure for Wales.  We have up to date training and workshop facilities with expert trainers and assessors to ensure whether you are taking the L3 CPD qualifications, or the L2 Certificate in Installation Qualification for new entrants, you will receive the best training available in Wales.

Plumbing courses

At the Neath Campus, we deliver full-time Plumbing courses at Levels 1 and 2. These cover a Technical Certificate and NVQ allowing training for practical hand skills that prepare you for the industry of both Plumbing and Heating and Ventilation. All assessments are carried out in our recognised assessment centre ensuring all learners are given the best possible start in a career as one of Wales’ leading craft skills.

All classrooms offer modern teaching resources and facilities to make sure all our learners are encouraged in their learning.

Newtown College

Electrical and Plumbing Courses

The Newtown Campus delivers both full-time and part-time Electrical and Plumbing courses from Level 1 to Level 3. Our state-of-the-art workshops and classrooms enable us to deliver quality training where the latest techniques and equipment are used to ensure learners are ready for this ever changing and demanding industry.

Apprenticeship Training Courses

Our work-based training and apprenticeships are delivered at same facilities as we offer our full time students. The workshops have recently been modernised and upgraded to incorporate all training and assessment opportunities to complete your trade qualifications. All teaching classrooms are complete with the most up to date teaching resources and staff are experts in the fields so are able to offer the latest in industry developments.

Swansea Campus – (formally Building Training Centre)

Plumbing Apprenticeship Training

Our work-based training and apprenticeships are delivered at our Craft Training Centre in Llansamlet, Swansea. This is part of a very large training centre which also provides courses in other areas of construction. The workshops have recently been modernised and now include facilities for training in new Environmental Technologies and Underfloor Heating courses. All teaching classrooms are complete with the most up to date teaching resources and there is even a five-a-side football pitch to let go of some of that energy built up from our exciting learning environment!  

Where do I start?

The School of Building Engineering Services offers programmes of study from Level 1 where no formal entry requirements are needed to Level 6 degree courses; up-skilling courses where placement on the programme is by predetermined criteria (which can be provided on request). All courses will include an interview with the Course Co-ordinator before acceptance onto the programmes.

We have the facility for Welsh speakers to engage in a Welsh-only provision through our online VLE Welsh speaker toolbox forum; where anyone can access delivery in Welsh if desired. Specialist Learning support is also accessed through the Learning Coach forum and can be accessed 24/7 in total confidence.  

Electrical Short Courses

We offer a full range of Electro technical short courses that include:

  • Part P Building Regulations
  • 17th Edition Wiring Regulations
  • Fundamentals of Inspection and Testing L2
  • Design Verification & Inspection and Testing L3
  •  Portable Appliance Testing L3.

All short courses can be delivered both on and off campus subject to pre-arrangements with our electrical staff.

Plumbing Short Courses

We offer a choice of full-time Plumbing courses for Building Engineering Services at Levels 1 (Certificate) and 2 (Diploma). Our modern workshop facilities have been recently remodelled and improved to provide learners with the relevant equipment used in the plumbing industry today. We can offer a full range of Plumbing and Heating short courses such as:

  • Part L Building Regulations L3
  • Cold Water Regulations L3
  • Unvented Hot Water Systems L3
  • Installation of Domestic Fire Sprinkler systems L3. (NEW)

All short courses can be delivered both on and off campus subject to pre-arrangements with our plumbing staff.
