School of Building Engineering Services

The School of Building Engineering Services offers a wide range of full-time and part-time courses plus commercial programmes designed to meet the needs of this highly innovative and fast-moving industry. We have extensive links with employers and businesses within Wales and further afield.

Our programmes in Building Engineering Services cover Electrical, Gas Technology, Plumbing, Heating and Ventilation, Energy Efficiency and Advice and Renewable Technologies and are delivered across four of our main campuses.


Afan Campus

The Afan Campus houses our ‘Energy Academy’ where we also operate the South Wales Central Hub for the National Skills Academy in Environmental Technologies.
As the lead hub for a network of providers in environmental technologies, we offer training in:
• Solar PV (photovoltaic)
• Micro-generation wind turbine
• Micro-generation solar thermal heating systems
• Heat pump (air and ground source) heating systems
• Rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling
• Biomass heating systems
• Under-floor heating (both electrical and water-filled)
• Wall and loft insulation installation
• Building treatment.
We are also one of the primary providers of the Domestic and Non-Domestic Green Deal Energy Advisor qualifications at Level 3 and Level 4. This qualification has arisen from Government initiatives to encourage energy efficiency and sustainability. The Home Energy Adviser role is key to delivering the Green Deal scheme implemented by the UK Government. Advisers will be trained to visit homes, provide accurate assessments of the property, identify opportunities for improvement in energy efficiency and provide the relevant recommendations that will help to make savings in fuel bills and carbon emissions. This qualification is recognised by the Welsh and UK Governments as the roles are central to the future of creating a more sustainable environment and the development of experts in providing correct and accurate advice on our homes and buildings.

Electrical courses

The Afan Campus delivers our Electrotechnical courses from Level 1 to Level 3. Our state-of-the-art workshops and classrooms enable us to deliver quality training where the latest techniques and equipment are used to ensure learners are ready for this ever changing and demanding industry.

We offer a full range of Electrotechnical short courses that include:

• Part P Building Regulations
• 17th Edition Wiring Regulations
• Fundamentals of Inspection and Testing L2
• Design Verification & Inspection and Testing L3
• Portable Appliance Testing L3.

All short courses can be delivered both on and off campus subject to pre-arrangements with our electrical staff.

Plumbing courses

We offer a choice of full-time Plumbing courses for Building Engineering Services at Levels 1 (Certificate) and 2 (Diploma). Our modern workshop facilities have been recently remodelled and improved to provide learners with the relevant equipment used in the plumbing industry today.
We can offer a full range of Plumbing and Heating short courses such as:

• Part L Building Regulations L3
• Cold Water Regulations L3
• Unvented Hot Water Systems L3
• Installation of Domestic Fire Sprinkler systems L3. (NEW)

All short courses can be delivered both on and off campus subject to pre-arrangements with our plumbing staff.

Gas Safety

The Energy Academy also contains our Gas Safe ACS training and assessment centre. This has developed into one of the largest centres of its kind in Wales and has been recognised by the awarding body as a ‘Centre of Excellence’. Facilities are constantly being updated to ensure the best training and assessment on both new and old equipment and systems are available.
The latest qualifications for entry into the Gas industry are delivered by experts in the field and benefit from being ACS aligned to improve quality of provision and safety in the workplace. The same staff who operate the Gas Safe training and Assessment deliver on this, thus ensuring the best outcome for all who choose this as their career path.


Neath Campus

Plumbing courses

At the Neath Campus, we deliver full-time Plumbing courses at Levels 1 and 2. These cover a Technical Certificate and NVQ allowing training for practical hand skills that prepare you for the industry of both Plumbing and Heating and Ventilation. All assessments are carried out in our recognised assessment centre ensuring all learners are given the best possible start in a career as one of Wales’ leading craft skills.

All classrooms offer modern teaching resources and facilities to make sure all our learners are encouraged in their learning.

Newtown Campus

Building Engineering Services (Electrical and Plumbing)

The Newtown Campus delivers both full-time and part-time Electrical and Plumbing courses from Level 1 to Level 3. Swansea Campus – (formally Building Training Centre)
Plumbing courses

Our work-based training and apprenticeships are delivered at our Craft Training Centre in Llansamlet, Swansea. This is part of a very large training centre which also provides courses in other areas of construction. The workshops have recently been modernised and now include facilities for training in new Environmental Technologies and Underfloor Heating courses.
All teaching classrooms are complete with the most up to date teaching resources and there is even a five-a-side football pitch to let go of some of that energy built up from our exciting learning environment!
 

Where do I start?

The School of Building Engineering Services offers programmes of study from Level 1 where no formal entry requirements are needed to Level 3 up-skilling courses where placement on the programme is by predetermined criteria (which can be provided on request).
All courses will include an interview with the Course Co-ordinator before acceptance onto the programmes.
We have the facility for Welsh speakers to engage in a Welsh-only provision through our online VLE Welsh speaker toolbox forum; where anyone can access delivery in Welsh if desired. Specialist Learning support is also accessed through the Learning Coach forum and can be accessed 24/7 in total confidence.
