The School of Building Engineering Services offers a wide range of full-time and part-time courses plus commercial programmes designed to meet the needs of this highly innovative and fast-moving industry. We have extensive links with employers and businesses within Wales and further afield.

Our programmes in Building Engineering Services cover Electrical, Gas Technology, Plumbing, Heating and Ventilation, Energy Efficiency and Advice and Renewable Technologies, as well as Building Control and Management Systems. They are delivered across four of our sites:

Afan College

Higher Education in Construction and Built Environment

These HE courses will meet the needs of those aspiring to a professional and technical career in construction & civil engineering. The courses serve as a route to full-time employment within the industry, including sectors including architecture, interior architecture, building engineering services, quantity surveying, site management, building surveying, land surveying, bridge engineering, highway design, and marine engineering.

Electrical

Afan College delivers our electro-technical courses from Levels 1 to 3 as well as electrical and electronic engineering for industry. Our state-of-the-art workshops and classrooms enable us to deliver quality training where the latest techniques and equipment are used to ensure learners are ready for this ever-changing and demanding sector.

As well as full-time courses we offer the opportunity to retrain in the electrical industry in preparation for a career change or upskill Professional Development. To compliment this we offer a full range of electro-technical CPD and are a recognised NICEIC training centre.

Gas Technology

The NPTC Energy Centre contains our Certsure LLP Gas Safe ACS training and assessment centre, as well as our EUIAS-approved training for Smart Meters. This has developed into one of the largest centres of its kind in Wales and has been recognised by the awarding body as a Centre of Excellence. Facilities are constantly being updated to ensure the best training and assessment opportunities for both new and old equipment and systems.

Fire Sprinkler Qualifications and Training

The NPTC Energy Centre also contains our Fire Sprinkler Training Area. As the only BAFSA Approved Training Centre in south Wales, we were the first to develop an upskilling professional development qualification for the mechanical services trades to deliver on the Welsh Government’s Fire Sprinkler Measure for Wales. We have up-to-date training and workshop facilities with expert trainers and assessors to ensure you receive the best training available in Wales.

Neath College

CONSTRUCTION AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

This Level 3 course will meet the needs of those aspiring to a professional and technical career in construction & civil engineering. The course not only serves as a route to full-time employment within the industry but is a proven progression route into Higher Education including the HNC at NPTC Group of Colleges.

The career opportunities in the construction and civil engineering sector are endless, including professions such as architecture, interior architecture, building engineering services, quantity surveying, site management, building surveying, land surveying, bridge engineering, highway design, and marine engineering.

Plumbing courses

At Neath College, we deliver full-time plumbing courses at Levels 1 and 2, delivering practical hand skills that prepare you for the industries of plumbing and heating & ventilation. All assessments are carried out in our recognised assessment centre ensuring all learners are given the best possible start in a career as one of Wales’ leading craft skills.

All classrooms offer modern teaching resources and facilities to make sure all our learners are encouraged in their learning.

Newtown College

Electrical and Plumbing Courses

Newtown College delivers both full- and part-time electrical and plumbing courses from Levels 1 to 3. Our state-of-the-art workshops and classrooms enable us to deliver quality training utilising the latest techniques and equipment to ensure students are ready for this ever-changing and demanding industry.

Apprenticeship Training Courses

Our work-based training and apprenticeships are delivered at the same facilities as our full-time courses. The modern workshops incorporate all training and assessment opportunities to complete your trade qualifications. All teaching classrooms are complete with up-to-date teaching resources and industry-expert staff deliver the latest in industry developments.

Swansea Construction Centre

Plumbing Apprenticeship Training

Our work-based training and apprenticeships are delivered at our Craft Training Centre in Llansamlet, Swansea. This is part of a very large training centre which also provides courses in other areas of construction. The workshops have recently been modernised and now include facilities for training in new Environmental Technologies and Underfloor Heating courses. All teaching classrooms are complete with the most up to date teaching resources and there is even a five-a-side football pitch to let go of some of that energy built up from our exciting learning environment!

Where do I start?

The School of Building Engineering Services offers programmes of study from Level 1 to Level 3 upskilling courses where placement on the programme is by predetermined criteria. All courses will include an interview before acceptance onto the programmes.

We have the facility for Welsh speakers to engage in a Welsh-only provision through our online VLE Welsh speaker toolbox forum; where anyone can access delivery in Welsh if desired. Specialist Learning support is also accessed through the Learning Coach forum and can be accessed 24/7 in total confidence.

All short courses can be delivered both on and off campus subject to pre-arrangements with our electrical staff.

Plumbing Short Courses

We offer a choice of full-time plumbing courses for Building Engineering Services at Levels 1 and 2. Our modern workshop facilities provide learners with the relevant equipment used in the plumbing industry today. We can offer a full range of plumbing and heating short courses such as:

  • Cold Water Regulations L3
  • Unvented Hot Water Systems L3
  • Installation of Domestic Fire Sprinkler systems L3 (NEW)
